Visual Management

Visual Management

Visual management is a key theme in Lean Operations. Visual management uses signs, labels, charts, graphs, and other communication tools to provide data efficiently. Conveying this information visually reduces the time invested in reading, processing, and interpreting text-based instructions. The idea is for operators, supervisors, and managers to gain the maximum amount of information and control without having to leave the work area or go into a computer system.

Many Lean tools, especially TPM, KANBAN, and 5S rely heavily on visual aspects. KANBAN itself means “sign”, and TPM, as well as other Lean tools, base information sharing on simple techniques where the consumers of information can easily access or even produce it in real-time.

Visuals indicate when action is to be taken.

The Importance of Visual Management

Visual management helps you separate the normal from the abnormal by placing in plain view key information, materials, and indicators of performance. During this process, visual indicators are displayed in the work area and continuously updated as tasks are performed or as issues arise. Visual management reveals abnormalities and allows everyone to have a transparent view of how work is progressing and where resources and problem-solving may be needed. Making abnormal conditions visual enables improvement.

Yet many organisations give little thought to the value of visual management. A human eye can see visual patterns 65,000 times faster in a picture than in tabular form. Visual management helps you see the normal versus the abnormal by placing visual cues and key indicators in plain view.

Benefits of Visual Management

Visual management provides numerous benefits throughout a facility, including:

  • Improved productivity and output
  • Clear, simplified instructions in complex environments
  • Safer workplace (given the clear, intentional visual communication)
  • Higher profits (due to more efficient processes)
  • Fewer errors and less guesswork throughout a work process
