TPM

What is Total Productive Maintenance? (TPM)

TPM is a world-class enabling tool used to secure improved business performance, and a cultural change where all equipment users are involved, from design to operation, with the overall goal of attaining a competitive advantage for the organisation. It focuses on getting the production, maintenance, and engineering teams to develop best practice and standardised work procedures, which are continually reviewed and updated. It is an integral part of Lean Manufacturing, as no Lean implementation can be successful with a high level of equipment breakdowns. Significant financial savings will arise through the proper implementation of TPM such as extended machine life, reduced scrap and rework, greater machine utilisation, fewer spare parts required, reduced energy consumption and reduction in waste disposal.

The Principle Characteristics of a TPM system are to:

  • Develop equipment knowledgeable people who will exercise their full potential.
  • Maintenance department moves from a “fire-fighting” mode to a proactive prevention mode.
  • Operators perform preventive maintenance functions they have been trained to perform - that do not require the capabilities of a specialised trained person.
  • Establish a total (companywide) Maintenance philosophy encompassing maintenance prevention, preventive maintenance, and improvement-related maintenance.
  • Create an Enthusiastic Work Environment.
  • Maximise Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).

Why TPM? It is not about fixing machines, it is about ‘deterioration prevention’ and ‘maintenance reduction’.
